ACE Grading vs PSA: Is the Price Premium Worth It for UK Collectors?

If you're a UK collector deciding where to send your cards for grading, you've likely asked yourself: should I grade with ACE Grading or PSA?

ACE Grading is UK-based, affordable, and fast. PSA is the global standard with unmatched resale premiums. But how big is the price difference in practice, and does it actually make financial sense to pay more for PSA?

We used real eBay sold data from our tracker to find out.

The Card: Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat 085 (Van Gogh Promo)

To make this comparison fair, we picked a card that has sold in both ACE 10 and PSA 10 grades: the Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat 085, the highly sought-after Van Gogh Museum collaboration promo from 2023.

This card is ideal for comparison because it's a modern promo with high collector demand, frequently traded on eBay in both grading labels, and valuable enough that the grading choice has a meaningful financial impact.

Real Sold Prices: ACE 10 vs PSA 10

The PSA 10 sells for roughly 79% more than the ACE 10 on the same card. Even using the 90-day PSA average of ~$1,938, the premium is still around 22% over the ACE sold price.

That's a significant gap — but it doesn't tell the full story. To understand the real return, we need to factor in grading costs and time.

Grading Fees Compared: ACE vs PSA for UK Collectors

The following fees and processing estimates were checked on 5 September 2026. The sale-price example above has not been revalued as part of this fee update.

ACE Grading: public and membership services

Standard labels are free. Colour Match adds £1 and an ACE Label adds £3 per card. Shipping and any AceSelect membership cost are additional. For example, Ultra with an ACE Label is £63 before shipping. Check submission requirements and the chosen tier's compensation limit before booking.

PSA: direct US service fees

PSA's Value Bulk, Value, Value Plus and Value Max tiers are temporarily paused for new submissions at the last check. The available services below are quoted in USD. A UK dealer's complete quote can differ; avoid treating a dollar service fee as a fixed sterling price.

Turnaround Time: ACE Grading vs PSA

ACE's public tiers range from an estimated 2 business days for Luxury to 30 for Basic; members-only Value and Core are estimated at 60 and 75 business days. ACE counts from the first full business day after arrival until the invoice is sent. Shipping, weekends and bank holidays are excluded.

PSA currently estimates 70–80 business days for Regular, 20–30 for Express and 10–15 for Super Express. Allow separately for shipping, intake and any dealer batching or handling. Processing estimates can change and neither provider's estimate guarantees the date a card will arrive back with you.

The ROI Calculation: When Does PSA Make Sense?

Updating the grading costs in the existing Pikachu example gives the following illustration. The earlier sale-price figures are retained as inputs, not presented as newly checked valuations. A $2,800 PSA value is above the $2,500 Express limit, so this example uses Super Express at $349.

The ACE subtotal is £1,230.70 minus £63 = £1,167.70 before other costs. A comparable PSA subtotal needs the actual GBP-per-USD payment rate; multiply $349 by that rate before subtracting it from the illustrative £2,200 sale price. These subtotals assume a grade 10 result and are not net profit. A lower grade changes the sale-price input.

For lower-value cards, compare the full submission cost with selling raw. On a £50 sale:

• ACE Basic's £18 fee leaves £32 before the card cost, optional label, shipping and selling expenses; the processing estimate is 30 business days.
• ACE Ultra plus an ACE Label costs £63 before shipping, already more than that £50 sale price.
• PSA Regular is $79.99 before other costs; use the actual exchange rate and a complete UK quote rather than the retired bulk-price assumption.

Choose the service using its current fee, turnaround estimate and value cover alongside comparable sale evidence. A headline per-card fee does not establish a profitable submission.

Market Recognition: Who Accepts What?

This is where context matters:

• UK buyers: ACE Grading is widely accepted and increasingly preferred for its slab design (especially the ACE Label artwork option). UK eBay listings with ACE slabs sell consistently.
• European buyers: ACE is growing across Europe but still less established than PSA. CGC is the main competitor in this space.
• US/International buyers: PSA dominates. International buyers will pay significantly more for a PSA slab than any other grading company. If you're selling globally, PSA is the clear winner.

The Verdict: ACE Grading vs PSA for UK Collectors

Neither service is universally "better." The right choice depends on your card's value, your target market, and how quickly you need your money back.

For most UK collectors grading modern cards in the £20-£200 range, ACE Grading offers the best combination of cost, speed, and domestic market recognition. For premium cards worth £500+, the PSA premium can justify the extra cost and wait.
